OC is mentioned in MineClone5/MineClone5#294 in relation to Mesehub and so a separate issue was requested by @kay27.

Here's how the OC page came to be.

  1. MineClone2 needed a place to host.
  2. Mesehub was born, originally for this single purpose.
  3. Running Mesehub costs some money.
  4. Preferrably I'd like for the community to share this cost
  5. Thus the OpenCollective page was created by me and @EliasFleckenstein03
  6. The purpose of OC page is to primarily fund past and future costs of the infra underpinning MineClone2 development. This has not yet been achieved.

I cannot comment on MineClone5 with regards to the above as I've no clue of how this fork aligns and intertwine with continous development of MineClone2.

@tacotexmex Thanks for the information. I did not see this until just now. I have one other question. What are the hosting costs for Mesehub? What amount are you targeting for the donations?

@MrRar The costs are approximated at $300/year. 💸

@tacotexmex Looks like you are doing OK in that case with $55 / mo in regular contributions. However that is only from 2 people.

Thank you for creating the issue, @tacotexmex Well, Fleck removed me from MCL2 owners, and they stopped accepting my technical debts, so I can't be a part of MCL2 anymore, and MCL5 is pretty fledged I guess. The question is will you ban MCL5?

@MrRar Yes, going forward, but I've also shouldered this cost for a couple of years already.

MCL5 is pretty fledged

What does this mean, @kay27?

I'm not looking to ban anything. Ideally the whole Mesehub instance should be merged into Codeberg, but that's going to be hard to do. What's your opinion?

Sorry for lagging, some IRL issues but return time to time

By the way why i cant find this repo in mesehub repo search by typing 'mesehub'? :)

Yes, Codeberg looks good, i tried to push mcl5 there rn, does anybody have an account there to play with it?

"Fledged" means, well, might depend on mcl2, or might not, as we decide

I'm sorry to dig this up but I think I might not be the only one who feels this way.

The purpose of OC page is to primarily fund past and future costs of the infra underpinning MineClone2 development. This has not yet been achieved.

This was the reason I have donated a fair amount to the mineclone2 OC thing. And I think that could well be the case for other donators as well.

With mcl2 now planning to move away from mesehub and to a free code hosting site (codeberg) I think the OC page should renamed to Mesehub and the funds still be used for that original purpose as there are quite a few of other repositories hosted here.

To me it sound like they are now planning to use that money for other things.

Now I know they will say "it says mineclone2 and we can do whatever we want and your opinion doesn't count anyways" and that is probably true but I will still say it: I do not agree with this and it is not what I have donated it for.

I am sorry for the drama it seems likely they are about to unleash here and won't participate in it but I know on the mcl2 page they would probably just delete or edit the post away.

The insinuation we would edit this isn't helpful. I have addressed this point here:

"Mesehub is creaking at the seems, it has ground to a halt on multiple occassions. Taco has expressed a desire to eventually taken it down and would be keen for projects to move away from it. We cannot continue using a platform if the hoster no longer wants to manage it. I know you have a project hosted there, and I strong suggest you consider migrating across if you want these projects to remain around long term.

Nowhere on the OC page does it mention being only for hosting. It may have sparked it's usage, but it's for the overall project. The money raised previously will still likely be used for hosting as it is not a straightforward process to switch. Secondly, we will need a website and a dev server that would be part of the development process and would likely cost, so the funding will still likely be used for hosting purposes.

I appreciate you raising this concern, and if the any donor would like to message me privately if they had this intention, I will consider this very seriously and with best intentions try to ensure that portion of funding goes towards hosting. So far we have spent $485.06 USD on hosting, and more is owed, and if for example Cora would like all of that contribution to go to Mesehub, I can assure her that funding was used for that purpose."
