Delete Branch "%!s(<nil>)"
Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
MineClone2 changing it's name (#3897) and moving to Codeberg at the same time is the moment for a general rebranding IMO.
New Logo + Header
I think our logo is not bad, but it depend on the Pixel Perfection textures and it makes sense changing it together with the name.
A vector logo would look more modern and be easier to scale up and down. A logo with the same art style as the Minetest logo would look nice, but if they eventually change their logo if they want to change their name too, the style will probably mismatch again so it can be a better idea to not follow this.
The header will need to be changed in any case if we eventually change the name, so we could also consider reworking its style. It looks really nice currently IMO, so we could just tweaks the colors a little bit to move away from PP colors and match the new logo.
Website
I think it would be really nice for MineClone2 to have it's own website instead of just relying onto Mesehub, ContentDB and the Minetest Forum for web searches. Making our own website will allow better SEO and also present the game more freely than what we can do on the CDB page for exemple. Codeberg have a Pages feature that basically allow publishing our website for free (or with a very low cost for a custom domain name), even if using a SSG instead of building the files by hand. I have some web development experience, so I can help building this if needed.
Consistent YouTube videos
Currently, our videos are not "bad", but could be much better.
The first videos I made were using Blender entirely, which is a pretty uncommon choice so when somebody else took on him the video creation, other software was used and the video was a completely different style. The style I used is really not great (animations were way too simple, thumbnails were using this ugly and boring dirt background instead of a great ingame picture, etc), but the newest video (that were not great, not bad either) using a completely different style is looking weird IMO in the YouTube video list.
I think we should discuss the style of the entire mcl2 branding and build a consistent set of guidelines and assets that can be used with ease in any final video editing software.
I have got a huge PC upgrade since I made the past videos, so I can make much higher quality video recordings if needed.
Move away from PixelPerfection?
We moved from 1.12 to latest MC target, we had a lot of copied texture issues with the 1.12+ version of PP, some textures from the original one even have weird looking color or design (#334).
I suggest in the future, since we have a funding platform and by moving to Codeberg no longer heavy infrastructure cost, that we can actually pay a professional pixel artist (like Zughy, which give a discount for foss projects) for remaking all of our current texture in an original style.
I don't know how much it can cost, but considering the amount of additional visibility can be given to the funding platform by adding it to ContentDB, building a website, doing more advertisement in general, etc. I think it may be possible if not now in the future.
Clearly provide our branding resources
I think we should share on a separate git repository, some kind of "press kit" with all the branding resources, logo, header, youtube templates, etc. both source files and final output, so it will become much easier for people who would like to access these elements. Currently we have blender files in the main repository which is not great since they are not a part of the game and they are difficult to find for people that are not in the development team.
On the topic of website provider, I have had excellent luck withtilde.team, a public access unix server (pubnix). They allow free user registration which permits website hosting. I have a semi-official mirror of mineclone2 on my gemini capsule aimed at being a minimal and lo-fi. Take a look and if you like the simple design of it maybe consider it with HTML.
I offered to do some youtube stuff for mcl2 once the name change happens. I am experienced in video editing and don't mind talking into a microphone. I am interested in doing a getting started installation video as well as some introductory modding tutorials.
If we decide to move away from PP I think Ex's texture pack stuff looks nice from what I saw. Also, I don't mind working on a few textures. JoMW may be interested too.
Great post, and I appreciate the level of thought and analysis you've put into it. I broadly agree with the points you've made, and have put my specific thoughts on each point below:
Logo and Header - Agreed, we could do with a change and with the rename is a great opportunity.
Website - Also agree. It would be great to have a curated entry intro into our game presenting it exactly how we want etc.
YouTube - Point taken on the inconsistent styling. Part of the driving force behind me picking this up was to get it timed with the release so we could drive traffic to the game. A minor reason was I hated the thumbnail and people weren't going to want to click it. Obviously these were my first videos, so my skills were limited. My goal was less about consistency, and more about getting interest and clicks. Making them fun, or funny or entertaining and themed so people can engage in them, and think "ooh, I'd like to try that game". It was aimed at people who didn't play, rather than those that did. It's unlikely I'll do the next and epCode has volunteered. Their graphical ability is far beyond mine, so it could be an option. I'm not sure if they want to do this on their own or you want to work with them. As long as we have some videos. They will be critical in our rebrand. We'd probably have to stylise our name as New Name (formerly known as MineClone2), or New Name (fka MineClone2) until we can see it far surpass it in Google trends. By pushing in Reddit FOSS subreddits, we can reach a reasonable part of the open source community, and it was one of the reasons we managed to get 4.6k, 4.4k and 3.4k views. Previously ones before I started were around 750-800. Subscribers have gone from 120 -> 350. So the marketing side is working, but we could do with better execution in terms of video production.
Move away from Pixel Perfection - I agree on the decision. I've kind of pushed for us to favour unique assets rather than PP. Most new PP seems to be derivative. You're lucky if you find one that isn't. Art decisions for any new content should be new (or ask our artists). If this fails, check PP, and verify that they aren't ripped from MC or derivative. I'd be happy if we never merged in a PP asset again. Exhale was working on an awesome texture pack. If he's ok with licensing, there is the temptation to make that the official texture pack. Of course, it's a lot of work to place on 1 person, and we might have to be pragmatic on this. Getting someone to do 2.3k assets is going to be hard, and even with fundraising, we probably don't have the resources to get close unless they were passionate about the project.
Brand repo - Great idea. Should we fork VoxelGoodEnough from here to Codeberg, and organise it into the different areas we will need?
When was this decided and by whom?
Do not misappropriate past donations that were explicitly given to fund MeseHub!
See mesehub/meta#4 (comment) for context how the donation page came to be and see mesehub/meta#4 (comment) for a comment from a donor who donated 450$ and obviously is not pleased with the proposal from @AFCMS.
@ancientmarinerdev I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, but if you control the funds, you should ask one. Even if it is legal, you would squander the goodwill of donors if you used funds given for one purpose (hosting) to fund another one (making pixel art).
Wow, now there's a leap... Yes, Cora gave $450 a while ago to provide structure funding for Mesehub. As far as I know, that all went to Taco Tex Mex to cover costs of hosting the docker image that we know and love as here. I'd hazard a guess that it's all but gone.
You act as if there's a gold filled back account out there, and that Ancient is going to squander it all away on "Blackjack, Hookers and Blow!" (to borrow from futurerama). Lmao. The immediate conclusions that people like you jump to, especially when you don't get your way, always amazes me and often times amuses me greatly.
Cora has already stated that she thinks that her donation should stay with Mesehub, so... want to lay off being a drama whore, @erlehmann ?
I mean, so not a becoming look for one so... yeah, I can't come up with a positive trait for you, sorry.
Also, if it hasn't been used up, it's rightfully Taco Tex Mex's for shouldering the burden of running the system for a few years on his own. But, that is just my opinion.
I will say this, Setting up a new means to fund the server structure and web hosting for the Software product soon to be formerly known as Mineclone 2 would be a good idea. Especially considering, I wouldn't want to make a donation to support the project and then have someone like Erlehmann (or even Cora) to misappropriate it for their own purposes. So, keeping it separate and away from the hands of those who would abuse it is indeed a forefront priority.
Please note, that nowhere in here would I ever say or think that Taco Tex Mex would misappropriate funds. I am directly looking at the person who IMMEDIATELY jumped to the conclusion, showing what He would do, given the chance.
I have not donated money. I am simply making the maintainer aware of a problem with the proposal and urge them to consider legal advice before using existing funds to cover expenses for new plans.
The code of conduct clearly states that it “use of sexualized language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind” and “Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks” are unacceptable behavior.
Calling me a whore can reasonably be seen as both. @ancientmarinerdev do you have something to say about this CoC breach?
That being said, I am not a whore. I may have had sex with people to get something out of it on a few occasions, but that does not make me a whore anymore than painting a few fences makes someone a painter or writing a few bad computer programs makes someone a programmer.
Have you tried demonstrating empathy and kindness toward other people?
I agree. Past donations should go to TacoTexMex for MeseHub. The donation page was just setup badly.
This seems like another insult to me. I am not aware of either me or cora misappropriating any funds, ever.
I'd prefer not to be referred to as a “He”.
Mesehub is creaking at the seems, it has ground to a halt on multiple occassions. Taco has expressed a desire to eventually taken it down and would be keen for projects to move away from it. We cannot continue using a platform if the hoster no longer wants to manage it. I know you have a project hosted there, and I strong suggest you consider migrating across if you want these projects to remain around long term.
Nowhere on the OC page does it mention being only for hosting. It may have sparked it's usage, but it's for the overall project. The money raised previously will still likely be used for hosting as it is not a straightforward process to switch. Secondly, we will need a website and a dev server that may cost, so the funding will still likely be used for hosting purposes.
I appreciate you raising this concern, and if the any donor would like to message me privately if they had this intention, I will consider this very seriously and with best intentions try to ensure that portion of funding goes towards hosting. So far we have spent $485.06 USD on hosting, and more is owed, and if for example Cora would like all of that contribution to go to Mesehub, I can assure her that funding was used for that purpose.
Secondly, Michieal, please retract the name calling. erle, I appreciate you raising the problem, but not the way it was done. When you raise a valid point but in a way used to undermine folk, it often loses it's purpose and power. I think you need to tone it down a bit here, as you've been going heavy on multiple issues now. I don't have the time or patience for this and will just delete escalations in future. I was tempted to edit out the name calling keep this on topic, but then you'd sulk and claim censorship again. I will in future as, if Kabou taught me anything, it is that responding constantly to drama doesn't help to decrease the amount.
Let's keep this on topic, and civil. Respond to the point and not the person.
Final point. Moving to Codeberg will not happen at the same time as the rename. As much as I'd want it to happen there is a bug in the migration script. If we moved now, we'd lose every PR and every issue. That is a cost too great atm. As much as I'd like to close down every issue, it's probably not ideal. Only devs see code repos so they don't have to really have the same name. We could call our repo pinkfluffyelephants and most users would be none the wiser :).
Either way, our hosting costs will likely continue for a period of time in the future.
Okay. @erlehmann I retract calling you a whore. I apologize to sex workers everywhere for making the comparison. I should have said something different, but I respect llamas too much. Sorry.
You immediately jumped to the conclusion that the funds would be misappropriated and misused. And, the apparent visible reason for this was to sow discord into the discussion - Hence it being the size of the Eiffel tower. Being that it was your outright initial reaction, the logical conclusion is that to you, it couldn't be anything else and that says volumes about you, not the current maintainer.
See above. It was retracted.
wait... so you're a bad whore? I'm confused here. lol. (Edit: totally missed that the first time around.)
Many times, and I would wholeheartedly encourage you to take your own advice! In fact, I try it every time I respond to something. Hence, me actually addressing certain points here.
This part, I can agree with.
See above, in this comment. Your Screaming in level one header shows your intentions more than anything else.
Sorry, but you have not given me (or anyone in your comments) you're preferred pronouns, if you'd care to express them, I will use them in future interactions.
Edit: I see that you have not offered your desired pronouns after a couple of weeks. When you do decide to offer them, I'll use them. Until such time, I will follow standard conventions and refer to you with common pronouns.
