I guess it's a render used as wielditem, I've attached two screenshots of two different nodes in hand: apple tree and apple wood for comparison. I think the difference can be seen clearly

Tried commenting the src/content_mapnode_plants.cpp:65:

f->setInventoryTextureCube("apple_tree_top.png", "apple_tree.png", "apple_tree.png");

But it became even worse. Hmm
