IrrlichtMT is an Irrlicht fork made by Minetest team specially for Minetest. I think we can do a switch by tweaking rendering code to support it and adding it to CMakeLists (so IrrlichtMT will be compiled WITH Voxelands) as Minetest already did.
It should speed up the game rendering and make this part easier to maintain
