Since the shepherd works at a loom and not herds sheep, why not rename the job to Weaver, even though the trades resemble that of Minecraft shepherds?

Speaking of shepherds, this is unfortunately also a very popular profession.
Every small house has a loom, and a villager is spawned for the bed, hence it will become a shepherd.
Every medium house has a barrel and a fletching table. Large houses have a cartography table, but probably have two red beds.

It would be great if someday the shepherd could really do this job, like in MC the farmer will plant and harvest crops, a shepherd could shear sheep if some sheep are near him and for example collect them in a chest nearby.

Of course it wouldn't be nice if the player just robs the wool 😉, but it could be some kind of cooperation. The player will have to place a chest, build a fence and lure some sheep into the fenced area where the shepherd resides. In return the shepherd shares his wool with the player.

Fenced sheep enclosures will have to be big enough to have a small house inside for the shepherd and his bed.

Just an idea, a chance to make villages more alive. 🙂

Yes, and spawn some sheep when there is a shepherd, too. It makes not sense if you have a villager with 5 shepherds and no sheep. A weaver is plausibly interested in buying wool then. If that is added, the character could be renamed back - this issue is just about the strings, not an actual behavior change right now, to no have shepherds without sheep.

That's a good idea, too. In small villages in biomes with sheep, it could be the task of a player to get sheep to the shepherd and build an enclosure, but in bigger villages, a fence around a shepherd's house and some pre-spawned sheep would bring more life to a village.

I hope I do not hijack your thread if I elaborate a bit on those ideas:

  • Farmer: Could plant and harvest crops like in MC. Will throw surplus food to other villagers (and therefore make automatic farms possible like in MC, but this is not the only reason).
  • Shepherd: Could be able to shear sheep and put the wool into a nearby chest, if both available. In bigger cities: Prespawn enclosure (fence) around shepherds house, a chest and some sheep (only problem I see: shepherd will not be able to get to the town bell, but it seems to not be implemented yet in VL anyway), in smaller villagers the player has to provide those to the shepherd if he wants to benefit.
  • Fisher: Villages could spawn artificial ponds with barrels like in MCLA, fishers could from time to time throw out a fishing rod (see #4471) and either put the fish into a barrel or use it as surplus fish as food for other villagers like farmers do.
  • Cleric: Could run around and heal villagers when not having full health. Fun addition: Could force nearby villagers out of love mode (preventing breeding). 😉

More ideas (but low priority imho):

  • Butcher: Well if the butcher kills farm animals, there should be some breeding before and a minimum number of animals the butcher will leave alive.
  • Cartographer: Could run around the village and the surroundings to create a map of the area, either one that hangs in his house or one the player could buy/trade from him.

If have more ideas for other villagers, too, but as I don't know what the community thinks about it and how probable it is that this would be implemented in VL, I will leave it thus far for the moment.

If it would be better to post this in a separate feature request thread, I could do this.

Just some ideas I would love to see implemented. 😀

The butcher has a fenced enclosure (with a door to the house) likely intended to contain some farm animals, the shepherd could be similar.
A pond would likely be another predesigned structure and just someone needs to design all these and add them as alternatives. Maybe prevent them from spawning in desert, too.
