Papercut issues I noticed on me first playing MC2 #1905

I just played for an hour and I really like this project, it's very cool! I think this is expecially helpful for people unable to affort Minecraft and/or running away from Microsoft.

I noticed the following things:

  1. Overall game play (breaking / placing / collecting blocks) feels GREAT!
  2. crafting menu is lacking short cuts I'm used to (e. g. shift-click to craft all ; right click and drag to create evenly split stacks this is especially useful for ladders and similar one-block-items)
  3. there's no off-hand (e. g. shield / placing torched). This hindered me.
  4. Movement feels very wobbly sometimes. Especially when jumping. It's not direct / crisp, you know what I mean?
  5. no knockback. Being hit or hitting others doesn't have a punch to it
  6. no sprinting (this really annoyed me)
  7. Does the hunger bar ever decline?
  8. being able to drop a torch item and the item adds illumination (helpful for ravines). Minecraft does this when you have OptiFine installed (many people do).
  9. Exploring caves and overworld is fun (not an issue just wanted to point out)

If I should point out the top bugs/annoyances then it would probably be 4, 6, 2 and 3 in that order.

Thanks so much for building this! With my feedback I am trying to give an impression on what MC2 feels like for the new player (me) who is not yet routine-blinded.
The game is really fun!

This needs an engine (Minetest) change.

  1. there's no off-hand (e. g. shield / placing torched). This hindered me.

This also needs an engine change.

  1. Movement feels very wobbly sometimes. Especially when jumping. It's not direct / crisp, you know what I mean?

I think gravity is not calculated correctly by the engine.

  1. no knockback. Being hit or hitting others doesn't have a punch to it

See MineClone2/MineClone2#1168 .

  1. no sprinting (this really annoyed me)

THERE IS sprinting! Maybe look at your Minetest key settings. Sprint uses Aux1 control.

  1. Does the hunger bar ever decline?

Yes, when you sprint for example.

  1. being able to drop a torch item and the item adds illumination (helpful for ravines). Minecraft does this when you have OptiFine installed (many people do).

I think youre looking for something like this: https://content.minetest.net/packages/mt-mods/illumination/ .
We are working on getting something like this into MineClone2.

  1. Exploring caves and overworld is fun (not an issue just wanted to point out)

We are happy that you like it. If you want to make new bug reports please first see if there is already an issue. But thank you for your feedback.

Sprint uses Aux1 control.

What button is that? I have crouch on Ctrl.

This needs an engine (Minetest) change. [...] I think gravity is not calculated correctly by the engine. [...]

Are all these upstream issues already in the Minetest issue tracker? If not, should I create them and point out that a re-write of MC is not possible without them?

I think youre looking for something like this: https://content.minetest.net/packages/mt-mods/illumination/ .
We are working on getting something like this into MineClone2.

Thanks!

So did I mention anything not already a duplicate? I can create new issues for sub-problems if that helps. Otherwise this might as well be closed as a duplicate.

It's e by default. And called "Aux1" in the change keys menu.

In my menu (Linux client on PC) it's called the "Special" key. Also, you have to hold the Special key to sprint while moving, by contrast to Minecraft's sprint toggle key.

Client version: 5.4.1

Mmmh weird I used Linux client on PC too to look that up earlier ... 5.5 Dev I believe.

I would like to add that there are a few shortcuts you can use in the inventory.

  • right-click to split a stack in half
  • hold RMB while dragging an itemstack to distribute the items in your inventory
  • shift-click to quickly move a stack of items into a chest

(The last one may not work if you are using MacOS since there is a bug in minetest preventing this)

Unfortunately we cant get the player controls in the inventory, this requires an engine change.

You can also use the mouse wheel (optionally together with shift click) to split / move items.

I use this for fast crafting.

We probably need to verify a bug is open for these items, link them and then close this ticket. It'll never get closed unless we do that.

Ok, here goes:

  1. crafting menu is lacking short cuts I'm used to (e. g. shift-click to craft all ; right click and drag to create evenly split stacks this is especially useful for ladders and similar one-block-items)

Discussed and explained, no need for an issue (engine differences).

  1. there's no off-hand (e. g. shield / placing torched). This hindered me.

We have issue #199 for this, waiting for Minetest 5.7.0 (hopefully) to include the feature.

  1. Movement feels very wobbly sometimes. Especially when jumping. It's not direct / crisp, you know what I mean?

Is doubling movement_gravity and movement_speed_jump config values a too ugly of a hack to even consider in order to solve the engine's extremely floaty player jumps? 😬 It does feel great.

We should give these a try - more of us -, and share feedback.

  1. no knockback. Being hit or hitting others doesn't have a punch to it

This was worked in PR #2804. Maybe we should retest to confirm it's good enough.

  1. no sprinting (this really annoyed me)

meme about Aux1 in Minetest

  1. Does the hunger bar ever decline?

Addressed multiple times, the last time (I think) in PR #2361.

  1. being able to drop a torch item and the item adds illumination (helpful for ravines). Minecraft does this when you have OptiFine installed (many people do).

I'm not sure about this. Minetest Game has fireflies, and I thought their light is dynamic as they move, but I just checked the game and the light is static. This would be very helpful indeed, so it's worth investigating and/or asking the Minetest developers.

We will need an issue for this. There may be a movement one Wuzzy raised, so I'll try and dig it out.

Do we have an issue ticket for this? Or will this be it for it?

tbh, I don't know if MC still does this. The last time I accidentally dropped a torch in MC, it didn't illuminate anything.

@ancientmarinerdev I just posted details in #1331. We can do this at least in the player's hand, but technically it seems possible to support dropped torches too.

Knowing more about things, the dropped torch illumination is only available in a modified version of minecraft. To find it, I installed optifine on my minecraft installation. That said, OptiFine has a lot of changes that it makes in Minecraft. I'll leave it up to the project leadership to determine if we want to support it, with the note that if we start adding in parts of optifine, others will most likely ask for more, and for other minecraft mods to become part of mcl2.

Wielded Light is one of the mt mods that works with mcl2. And, this aspect could be something for the official modpack instead of the main game.
